Beth Matsuda will present this week’s story and message on Jackie Pullinger (born 1944), a British Christian missionary renowned for her transformative, Spirit-empowered work among the poor, drug addicts, and Triad gang members in Hong Kong.
This video tells the remarkable, faith-based story of Jackie Pullinger and her missionary work in the Kowloon Walled City, a notorious and lawless area in Hong Kong.
Key highlights include:
- Arrival and Mission: Arriving in Hong Kong with very little money, Pullinger felt called to serve the hopeless. She eventually focused her efforts on the Kowloon Walled City, a densely populated area controlled by Triad gangs, rife with drug addiction, prostitution, and extreme poverty.
- Building Trust: Rather than preaching immediately, Pullinger focused on sharing her life and being present for the people—offering food, housing, and support. This helped her gain the trust of local youth and even gang leaders.
- Spiritual Empowerment: Pullinger emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit in her ministry. After receiving the gift of speaking in tongues, she began praying specifically for addicts. She recounts numerous testimonies of individuals finding the strength to overcome long-term heroin and opium addiction without medical intervention, attributing their recovery to a personal encounter with Jesus.
- Lasting Impact: The work grew into a fellowship that bridged immense social divides, bringing together street sleepers and people from all walks of life. The Kowloon Walled City was eventually torn down in 1994, but the transformation of lives remains a powerful legacy of her ministry.
